Belfort Instrument manufactures this eight-inch non-recording gauge to the rigid National Weather Service specification 450.2301. Five parts comprise the complete instrument-the receiver, the overflow can, the measuring tube, the measuring stick, and the support.
Precipitation caught in the receiver is funneled into the measuring tube. Here, the accumulation can be determined with a magnified scale measuring stick. The precisely dimensioned measuring tube has a capacity of two inches. Precipitation exceeding this amount spills into the overflow container, but can be easily measured by returning it into the measuring tube for total precipitation accumulation. Used in this way, the instrument has a total capacity of 20 inches (500 mm).
To measure snowfall, the receiver and measuring tube are removed and the snow depths can be directly measured in the overflow container or reduced to water and measured in the conventional way.
